A major road connection could shorten journeys between some of Abu Dhabi’s busiest island destinations, with the first phase of Mid-Island Parkway scheduled for completion in 2027.
The AED2.85 billion phase will connect Saadiyat Island with the Umm Yifeenah Island Central Interchange. According to the Department of Municipalities and Transport, the connection is expected to reduce journeys towards Reem Island or Abu Dhabi’s main island from 25 minutes to approximately 10 once open. Mid-Island Parkway: the route and timeline
The eight-lane route extends from Saadiyat’s existing northern E12 interchange across the island and onwards to Umm Yifeenah. Its engineering includes a 600-metre underwater section beneath Khor Laffan.
Walking and cycling also feature in the plans. Four kilometres of additional tracks will help create a continuous 12-kilometre route across Saadiyat and onto Umm Yifeenah.
For residents, the main attraction is the potential time saved on everyday journeys. However, the advertised travel times remain projections for the completed connection.
The 2027 target applies to phase one. A further phase is planned to extend the corridor towards destinations including Al Raha Beach and Khalifa City.
